A quick Google search of “The history of education in the United States” brings up this Wikipedia image and makes me think back to what it was like before the age of computers and the internet:

When a school teacher in the early 1900s stood up to teach their class they had paper books, chalk, and a chalkboard, but I believe that the goal of a truly great teacher was the same back then as it is today.

“Education is not filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” ~ William Butler Yeats

I believe that all great teachers want to give their students the love of learning and in today’s modern world teachers and students have access to so many amazing pieces of technology that can help create and expand that love of learning.

When Sal Kahn began remotely tutoring his cousin Nadia who was struggling with unit conversion in 2004 - he had no idea what a huge impact he was about to make on the world. With the use of his telephone and Yahoo Doodle Sal started tutoring Nadia over the internet since he was many states away. As word spread of his success, he began to post his lessons to YouTube, and in a short time Kahn Academy was born.

Today Kahn Academy offers resources for all teachers that allow them to utilize the amazing teaching tools for students in K-12 classrooms. This is just one of the many K-12 educational technology solutions that are now available. There are many times that I sit back in awe of the amazing technology advances that we’ve been able to make in the classroom. iPads, laptops, smartphones, and projectors are just a few of the many commonplace pieces of technology that students get to interact with each day. Technology has dramatically and rapidly changed education as we know it today.

As teachers are given new technology tools for education and they learn to adopt new ideas and adapt their teaching styles, students everywhere will have the opportunity to benefit in greater and greater ways from the technology we have available today. With each and every new piece of software, and with every new device, the arsenal of tools for a teacher grows. With this ever expanding toolset it is my hope that teachers everywhere will be able to achieve that incredible goal of helping more students find the true love of learning.
