The Pre-Algebra materials are designed to cover most of the Common Core State Standards for 7th and 8th grade. The two main topics that have been omitted from these standards are Data Analysis (7th grade) and Geometry (7th/8th grade). The focus of Pre-Algebra is to prepare the students for Algebra I rather than cover all of the 7th and 8th grade CCSS. The first unit (Numbers and Operations) emphasizes the five basic operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide, exponents) with numbers. These are skills students will need for the rest of the course.
The second unit (Expressions and Equations) focuses on these operations with Algebraic expressions and equations. The students will then apply these skills in the third unit (Factors and Monomials) with monomials. The next two units (Proportional Reasoning and Inequalities) use the skills learned in the second unit while teaching skills that will be needed later in the year. The final two units (Algebraic Concepts and Systems) expose students to topics that will be taught in Algebra I next year. The topics in each unit build as the unit progresses, while constantly spiraling back. The units are also designed to connect current topics to previous units. This type of design helps improve understanding and retention.
Each of the lessons start with engaging discussions that will get the students talking and thinking about mathematics. The lessons continue by stating a high-level objective. These objectives are met through high-level questioning that emphasizes reasoning ability and conceptual understanding as well as facts and algorithms. All of this is done by engaging the students with activities, applications, and games in a teacher-friendly format.
All of our math courses are available both in digitally and in physical form. With purchase of the curriculum, the teacher will receive a hard copy form of the teacher manual. Hard copy student manuals are available, but will incur an additional cost.
Each unit comes with all Powerpoints, Assignments, Quizzes and Tests both for the teacher and student.
There are no additional programs or software needed to run this course. Additional materials used throughout the class are provided on purchase. For downloading and accessing the digital copy of the course internet access will need to be available
