Before you purchase, make sure you have access to the technology and equipment needed to teach this course.
Computer lab with internet access. Internet access is a must as this course will send your students to various websites for activities, video clips, games and research.
Projector or Printer / Copier: Course material is web based to keep costs down, provide easy access anywhere with internet connection and enhance flexibility. Most topics are covered in PowerPoint format so the ability to project them or print them out is a must.
GameMaker: Studio must be downloaded on each student’s computer. There is a free version of this program. Go here: http://www.yoyogames.com/studio/download then click the button that says Download GameMaker: Studio.

Game Maker Studio needs to be installed on each computer individually as it uses a secure DRM that needs to be authenticated to the hardware. You need to install the program when you are logged into the computer as the final user (the student account). It cannot be installed onto a server and cannot be installed as an Admin. If you are like most schools, you have access limitations on the student’s accounts so they can’t download unwanted programs. You will need to “lift” those restrictions, install this software and the put those restrictions back on. That is how most schools handle this.
System Requirements for Game Maker Studio:
Windows XP, Vista, 7 or Windows 8
Screen resolution of 1024×600
PLEASE NOTE: When attempting to install and launch Game Maker Studio for the first time, the program attempts to access the internet to obtain a FREE license key. We have found that some schools have a Proxy Server or Firewall that will block this attempt to automatically obtain a license key. Currently there is no way to install Game Maker Studio without the ability to obtain a FREE license key. Depending on how your network is set up, it may be possible to add an exception to the Proxy Server or Firewall that will allow the program to obtain a license. If your school's system or network administrator can not add an exception and get this process to work, there are two options:
Download and use GameMaker 8.1 Lite. This version no longer receives support or updates from YoYo Games, however it will still work for running a GAME:IT class (different curriculum materials must be downloaded to work with the Game Maker 8.1 Lite program).
In the future this version may need to be updated to the Game Maker Studio version. Here is the link to the Installer file:
Purchase educational licenses from YoYo Games. Information on educational licenses can be found at http://wiki.yoyogames.com/index.php/GameMaker:Studio_Education
