Description

This STEM Fuse course introduces students to the field of clinical laboratory science.  Medical laboratory scientists and medical laboratory technicians collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances. Most medical laboratory scientists and technicians work in healthcare laboratory facilities.

Medical laboratory scientists typically do the following:

  1. Analyze body fluids such as blood, urine, and tissue samples to determine normal or abnormal findings.
  2. Collect and study blood samples for use in transfusions by identifying the number of cells, the cell morphology or the blood group, blood type, and compatibility with other blood types.
  3. Operate sophisticated laboratory equipment such as microscopes and cell counters.
  4. Use automated equipment and computerized instruments capable of performing a number of tests at the same time.
  5. Log data from medical tests and enter results into a patient’s medical record.
  6. Discuss results and findings of laboratory tests and procedures with physicians.

In this course, your students will learn about and perform laboratory testing to diagnose and monitor disease.

Flexibility is given in presenting this material. Power Points, lesson plans and activities are available as well as links, videos and support materials.

Supplies needed for this course are minimal and “dry lab” options are given.
